Some places stay with you long after you’ve left them. Firs Farm Wetlands in Edmonton is one of those places for me.

I’ve walked there many times — through the seasons, in all weathers — watching the light change over the water, the bare silver birch trees standing quietly against the sky. There’s something deeply moving about this place. It was once a forgotten river — Moore’s Brook — buried and lost for decades. Then, through careful ecological restoration, it was brought back to the surface. The water flows again. The wetland filters and breathes. The landscape lives.

The Forgotten River was painted from a photograph I took on one of those walks. I wanted to capture that particular quality of light — the stormy blue-grey of the sky reflected in the water, the warm terracotta earth of the foreground, the delicate white branches of the birch trees reaching upward. It’s a painting about restoration. About what returns when we give nature the space to recover.

Built up in heavy impasto layers across two canvas boards, the texture catches the light and shifts throughout the day — the surface alive in a way that a flat print never could be.
