In my previous blog, I wrote about why thoughtful interiors matter, especially in serviced accommodation where properties can begin to look alike. This time, I wanted to show how I’d refresh an existing Airbnb without replacing most of its furniture.
Starting with what you have
The room had a blue sofa, a charcoal corner sofa, a yellow accent chair and wooden furniture. They weren’t pieces I’d necessarily choose together, but they didn’t need replacing. I looked for a colour story that could connect them.
Using artwork to create the colour story
Rather than adding art at the end, I started with pieces from my Maison M Store collection in soft blues, greys, earthy browns and touches of gold. The blue sofa felt more intentional, the chair picked up the warmer tones, and the wood complemented the earthy colours. Cushions, softer curtains and a rug helped tie it all together.
Small changes can alter how a room feels
Most of the main furniture stayed. I focused instead on artwork, textiles, lighting, greenery, accessories and a different coffee table. The original room was functional, but the refreshed version gave those existing pieces a stronger connection and a clearer identity.
Original art doesn’t have to be the finishing touch
Artwork can be the thing you build a room around, not the last thing you choose. In serviced accommodation, budgets, durability and practicality matter, but personality does too. An original painting can set the palette without making everything else expensive or bespoke, and give the property something distinctive.
A refresh rather than a redesign
Keep the pieces that work, change what doesn’t, and use artwork to give the room direction. For property owners and hosts, a better interior doesn’t always mean starting again. Sometimes it means making what you already have feel intentional.
