From Forest to Canvas: How Nature Inspires My Art

Framed Abstract Silver Birch Tree Landscape – Grey & Taupe Original Painting by Maison M

There's something about a woodland walk that stays with you long after you've left.

The way light filters through the canopy. The quiet rustle of leaves underfoot. The way a single tree can look completely different depending on the season, the weather, the time of day. These are the moments that find their way into my paintings — not immediately, but slowly, settling into memory until they're ready to become something new.

I don't sketch outdoors or paint on location. My process is quieter than that. I walk, I observe, I absorb — and then I return to the studio and let what I've seen come through in the work. It's a kind of translation, from the living world into texture and colour and form.

Nature has a rhythm that I find endlessly fascinating. The organic shapes of branches reaching upward. The layered tones of bark and moss and earth. The way gold light breaks through trees in autumn and turns everything warm and luminous. These aren't things I consciously plan to paint — they simply emerge, because they've become part of how I see.

That's why texture is so central to my work. The impasto technique I use — building up layers of paint until the surface has its own depth and dimension — feels like the most honest way to capture what I experience in nature. A flat image can show you a tree. But texture lets you feel it.

Every piece in the Maison M collection carries a piece of those walks with it. The botanical forms, the earthy neutrals, the flashes of gold — they're all rooted in the same quiet, unhurried world I return to again and again for inspiration.

If you've ever stood in a woodland and felt something shift — a kind of stillness, or wonder — then you already understand what I'm trying to bring into your home.
